Brown Deer schools accommodate families who want their children to learn faster, and the school district is doing everything it can to meet the needs of students who learn at very different levels. Now the Brown Deer School district is helping to preserve diversity by convincing families of all cultures and backgrounds that Brown Deer is a home for them.

In recent years, for example, some primary schools have introduced programmes that allow more advanced pupils to learn at their own pace. Mary Wells, who attends Falcon's Nest, said the students were separated from the rest of their classmates for most of the day.

In the long run, Brown Deer's diverse suburban schools have a better chance. But education policies have changed, including housing policies, which have led to the exodus of middle-class white residents, often caused by a lack of affordable housing for black students and their families. And in the case of the brown deer, this could leave the city with a population of only about 1,000 people, or less than 1% of its current population.

Mike Weeden said parents of Brown Deer who took their children to Homestead persuaded the Weedens to take another shot. While Maria's classmates, who will start seventh grade in the fall, are considering other school options, the family knows of an eighth-grader who wants to move to other secondary schools.

They doubt their children, who are mostly in second grade as freshmen, will be challenged enough at Brown Deer. They also fear the twins will be frustrated and bored by the high number of new students in their first year of high school.
